JAMMERZINE EXCLUSIVE: AN INTERVIEW WITH THE VELDT’S DANNY CHAVIS

On the eve of what most certainly sounds like a stellar tour to behold with Phantogram, we get a chance to talk to a member of one of the Psych-Soul-Shoegaze pioneers in the form of Danny Chavis of The Veldt. When I say this band is one of the true pioneers, I’m not just saying that to say it. Just look at the roster of artists that they’ve collaborated with: TV On The Radio, Mos Def, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Lady Miss Kier (Deee-Lite), and most recently with A.R.Kane. They’ve shared the stage with the likes of The Pixies, Throwing Muses, Echo & The Bunnymen, Cocteau Twins, Manic Street Preachers, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Oasis and Living Colour. But that is small when compared to how well their music stands on it’s own! Their 1994 album, “Afrodisiac”, is on the list of Pitchfork’s “The 50 Best Shoegaze Albums Of All Time” list last October!

Video Premiere: "In a Quiet Room" by The Veldt

Approaching the end of the year, NYC-Raleigh four-piece The Veldt are releasing the new video for their track “In a Quiet Room”, which appears on their latest EP The Shocking Fuzz of Your Electric Fur. We are thrilled to premiere this sensual video, filmed by Toshikazu Kaneiwa , a NYC-based indie filmmaker hailing from Tokyo, Japan.

A long-time friend of The Veldt’s bassist Hayato Nakao, he met the rest of the members of The Veldt in 2001 in the kitchen at an Upper West side Japanese restaurant. They were recording as Apollo Heights at the time. “They guided my soul when I was in NYC in 2001-2014,” explains Toshikazu, who lived in the Big Apple from 1996 to 2014 before returning to Japan.

Rediscovering The Veldt’s Afrodisiac Album by Michael A. Gonzales #SleptOnSoul

Twin brothers Daniel and Danny Chavis, who co-founded their rock band the Veldt in 1987, have shared their varied musical tastes since they were kids dwelling in North Carolina. Raised in Apollo Heights, a subdivision located in Raleigh, both boys sang in a Baptist church choir before becoming wayward teenagers in the early ‘80s.
