Thanks to The Moth and Areanna Rose – The Veldt

I continue to be amazed by The Veldt’s ability to similtaniously shimmer yet saunter, chime but groove. How do you even do that? On the one hand they play with sounds which seem built of almost intangible, ethereal qualities, the stuff of stardust and dreams but the clever part is that they then bolt those fey and ephemeral vibes on to soulful and sultry rhythms, pulsating beats, raw post-rock guitarwork and infectious boogies to fashion the perfect blend of texture and solidity.

Phantogram and The Veldt Spring Eastern U.S. Tour, March 11-17

Alternative pop icons Phantogram and shoegaze alternative soul pioneers The Veldt have announced they will play six exclusive U.S. Eastern U.S. cities before the former departs for their European tour. The duo will again return to the U.S.A. in mid-April for two separate appearances at Coachella.

On the eve of what most certainly sounds like a stellar tour to behold with Phantogram, we get a chance to talk to a member of one of the Psych-Soul-Shoegaze pioneers in the form of Danny Chavis of The Veldt. When I say this band is one of the true pioneers, I’m not just saying that to say it. Just look at the roster of artists that they’ve collaborated with: TV On The Radio, Mos Def, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Lady Miss Kier (Deee-Lite), and most recently with A.R.Kane. They’ve shared the stage with the likes of The Pixies, Throwing Muses, Echo & The Bunnymen, Cocteau Twins, Manic Street Preachers, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Oasis and Living Colour. But that is small when compared to how well their music stands on it’s own! Their 1994 album, “Afrodisiac”, is on the list of Pitchfork’s “The 50 Best Shoegaze Albums Of All Time” list last October!

Video Premiere: "In a Quiet Room" by The Veldt

Approaching the end of the year, NYC-Raleigh four-piece The Veldt are releasing the new video for their track “In a Quiet Room”, which appears on their latest EP The Shocking Fuzz of Your Electric Fur. We are thrilled to premiere this sensual video, filmed by Toshikazu Kaneiwa , a NYC-based indie filmmaker hailing from Tokyo, Japan.

A long-time friend of The Veldt’s bassist Hayato Nakao, he met the rest of the members of The Veldt in 2001 in the kitchen at an Upper West side Japanese restaurant. They were recording as Apollo Heights at the time. “They guided my soul when I was in NYC in 2001-2014,” explains Toshikazu, who lived in the Big Apple from 1996 to 2014 before returning to Japan.

Interview The Veldt / English Version from Le Champsonore

When the shoegaze regains a second wind, notably by its convergence with the psychedelic music, the new EP of the pioneers The Veldt incites us to re-listen the first records of the genre. Danny Chavis of The Veldt answered some questions as a prelude to this return at the beginning.
